It has recently come to my attention that they've developed new UV reactive tattoo inks, which are supposed to be completely safe to use...
I think it's basically the same stuff they've been using to tag animals in the wild for research..

I'm currently getting a full backpiece done, with a black tribal sun in the centre. I'm thinking of using the inks to give the sun a glowing corona.
My tattooist has never used UV ink, but is buying some in for me to have a go...

Anyone interested? Got any experiences of UV ink? Think it's a stupid idea? .... If I get a response, I'll try to get some pics of the process for yous!

Are you talking about the black light reactive ink? I am also interested in that kind of ink for my full back as well.
If you or anyone else has any expierance with it I would also like to know more(possible allergies/reactions, how long it lasts, etc.)
Thanks
Frank

Yeah - that's the one.
From the research I've done there don't appear to be any side effects. If you use the white ink (glows blue-green), it isn't visible in daylight on pale skin. Like any tattoo, the process will leave some scarring, which is visible in daylight for up to a year. The literature I've read doesn't suggest how long the ink will glow for, but apparently they've been testing/using it for ten years.
You can also get different colours of UV ink which are visible in daylight, but also glow under UV light.. These inks are designed to go over the top of a tattoo which is already coloured because they can look patchy.
The only other thing I know is that the ink has to be applied under UV light - which is possibly one reason why there aren't many places that do it.
Anyway, I've ordered my ink and it should be arriving in the next fortnight... I'll keep you posted as to how it all goes.

well - its taken an intolerably long time... but i not have some UV inkwork... i've outlined some stars in a design on my forearm and it's actually really effective!
It glows a brilliant blue in UV light, although my experimentation shows that it really doesnt work if you use it in the same area as conventional ink.
It was done about a month ago, and is still clearly visible and a bit pink in daylight.. although i have a feeling that it's more to do with the formaiton of scar tissue than the ink being visible. I can asses it properly in a few months.
My tattooist had to go over the area several times (in the same sitting) to achieve a decent glow.. otherwise it looks really patchy.
It also bleeds much more than usual because the ink is really watery.
Pleased with the results though - now onto my back
